Polyamorous dating is an interesting thing. And it is also quite misunderstood by the monogamous world around us. By its very definition, it simply means “more than one love.” Yet, if you look up the dictionary definition of polyamory rather than just focusing on the word’s roots, you will find many varying ideas of it, most of which concentrate on the sexual aspect of romantic relationships.

For example, Google defines polyamory as “the practice of engaging in multiple sexual relationships with the consent of all the people involved” while Urban Dictionary defines it as, “the practice, state or ability of having more than one sexual loving relationship at the same time, with the full
knowledge and consent of all partners involved.”

These definitions bother me because they focus too heavily on the sexual nature of the relationships.

Actually, most definitions of polyamory bother me because they focus too heavily on the sexual nature of romantic relationships. Dictionary.com defines polyamory as “the practice or condition of participating simultaneously in more than one serious romantic or sexual relationship with the knowledge and consent of all partners.” The Cambridge English Dictionary calls polyamory “the practice of having sexual or romantic…
