Mind Control
by Michelle Montoro
You are in my head. But that is not where you are supposed to be. You live in New Jersey. Please go back there.
I want to be alone. By myself. But the things you say, they are always there. And then, you are always there.
The things you have said. I can hear them. Repeating. And somehow, they give me strength. Maybe it’s the strength I need.
“You’re fat.”
“You’re a fucking retard.”
“You stupid cunt.”
Once upon a time, I started to believe it. Now, it gives me strength to see what you are.
And it gives me clarity to see what I am.
“I am beautiful.”
“I am brave.”
“I am brilliant.”
And I am stronger than I have ever been.
Strong enough to say, “Good-bye.”
Brilliant enough to say, “Fuck you.”
