I know the subject is taboo. Perhaps even more so than discussions about sex with a partner. Or multiple partners, for that matter.

We all assume that people in marriages or other types of committed relationships have sex. While many people may be uncomfortable sharing the details of their sex lives, there isn’t much discomfort in the world knowing that sex happens. All the time.

It is an assumption that we all make in a world of coupledom and partnering. If there are children running amok, there is sex being had. It simply can’t be denied.

Some friends may compare notes about the frequency of sex in their lives. And some friends may even discuss certain details and positions they have tried with their partners. I even have some friends who are totally comfortable with sharing intimate and graphic specifics of their sex lives. It is, after all, a great way to explore new ideas for your own bedroom activities.

But bring up the topic of masturbation, or sex with yourself, and watch how quickly people’s faces will go red with embarrassment.
